Jack the Hat Richards served at New Scotland Yard, Britain's` premier police force. During his forty years service over thirty was as a detective, attaining the rank of Detective Superintendent, working not only in the London Police but also as a senior officer with the National Police Crime Squad. He attained a detection rate second to none. He acquired a reputation as an investigator, truthful officer with unblemished character. He was in fact unsurpassed in the history of British policing. Always wearing his trilby hat he became affectionately known as Jack the Hat. On retirement he left the hustle and bustle of London heading north to Cheshire. His wife Anne originating from this tranquil and up market area was wishful to end her days near to her family. Life's plans often do not travel in the direction planned. Jack, was so very well known to the Home Office in London and Police Chiefs nationwide. With the country in a depression, police stations closing, officers being made redundant, no recruitment police resources were stretched. Jack is recalled to assist various police forces in the investigation of serious and seemingly unsolvable crimes. An officer Doris Scott-Ling is designated to assist him. He being retired having no police powers it fell to her to be the officer carrying the powers of a constable. There was some local resentment and so on the first occasion the duo were designated by the Divisional Police Chief to work from the Police museum adjacent to the Chester City Police Station. On future occasions all his assignments were from an office in the museum, aptly the detectives office still in the original garb. There are now some unusual murders all the victims have one thing in common, they are preachers of a new religious order. They are all murdered in a very sadistic manner. After numerous police enquiries Jack is called and eventually he resolves the case but comes to a much different conclusion that the regular officer originally designated to deal with the cases.He is then recalled again, to assist in a series of much different and unusual murders. Several sisters all originating from the mountains of North Wales are discovered murdered, there is an outcry. Police enquiries are made and soon the husbands are arrested. The cases appear clear cut and eventually all are convicted.They appeal, Chief Constable Myers decides to call in Jack Richards to review the cases and enquiries made. He does so with very surprising and startling results.Both cases are a mystery to the end.
