Pete Garrison will be retiring soon. He and his wife, Kate, are both excited. The plan is to spend more time with their only grandchild. As he and his wife prepare for their golden years, circumstances begin to unfold that will change their lives forever. Others from outside this small community will become involved. Dean Stewart and Chris Campbell, two former college fraternity brothers, will embark on the adventure of a lifetime—hiking the Appalachian Trail for three months. The young professional couple, John and Tara Preston, and their daughter, Michelle, will take to the highways in an old Volkswagen van. And then there was Ben Lightfoot. Ben has been in trouble since his youth. He roams through the southeast, always keeping one step ahead of the authorities. In northern Georgia during the long, hot summer of 1982, malevolent darkness will settle in on Union County. In the end, Pete Garrison will come to realize that things are not always as they seem. He and the others will find that the thin line between reason and madness is extremely fragile.
