About The Eddystone Convergence Of 1955

Principal Keeper Hamilcar Beowulf Epworth Gusset, 3rd Lord Suddock, Peer of the Realm and man of letters, sees his life as moving peacefully towards its close. His intention is it should stay that way. But then the Cold War arrives. Presently he finds himself signing the Official Secrets Act, divorcing his wife of forty years, marrying a soubrette young enough to be his granddaughter, and at ninety-one riding a bicycle on the high wire in Antoine's Circus in the formal garb of the Archbishop of Canterbury. He isn't the only one for whom life will never be the same again. When the Navy arrives in strength to relieve a population that has grown to seventeen - in a lighthouse designed to provide accommodation for three keepers in moderate discomfort - the scene is set for a denouement in the very public arena of the Royal Albert Hall, London. The Eddystone Convergence of 1955 portrays tower rock lighthouse life much as it had been lived for the previous 150 years. In 1998 automation was to bring an end to the role of the lighthouse keeper for all time.
