"Shadow Kingdoms" is Book 4 from "Illustrated Tales from An Alternate Steampunk History" series. It is the third installment in "The Adventures of Captain Lionheart" series and continues from where "Pangaea" left off, on a newly discovered Earth like planet almost a thousand light years away. On Pangaea, an Earth-like planet nearly a thousand light years away, Captain Lionheart and the crew of his starship, the Onyx Tower, have neutralized the deadly alien force that attacked shortly after they first arrived. The planet is safe, at least for now. Across Pangaea are the scattered ruins of an extinct civilization. It seems clear the alien entity they first encountered had been the cause of their demise. After exploring the ruins of an ancient site, Lionheart is completely unaware that a different, invisible alien entity has followed him back to the tower. Shortly after, he begins to have powerful dreams and visions of places on Pangaea. He is filled with an urgency to redirect the ship's exploration to find these places. As he visits them one by one, the crew make the incredible discovery of people living among the ruins. An even more incredible discovery comes when he finds that many of them are descendants of the Onyx Tower's crew, and they have been on Pangaea for nearly a thousand years. That makes a future time disruption event for the Onyx Tower a certainty. For Pangaea's last millennia of history to unfold, Lionheart and crew must go back in time. However, history has different meanings to different people. The people of Pangaea know their history. Their ancestors had a legend that a tower would come from the stars in search of three keys that unlock history's doorway. In order to save history, the tower must pass thru the doorway.
