About Prize Stories 1993
"Long an annual literary tradition, Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards enters its seventy-third year with this volume. Established in 1918 as a monument to the memory of one of the early masters of the American short story, O. Henry, Prize Stories has traditionally presented a remarkable sampling of stories. This collection is no different, bringing together twenty-three stories published in the past year, in magazines large and small, by long-established writers and others in the early stages of their careers. Although eclectic in content and varied in subject, all of the stories included here reflect something of the time in which they were written. William Abrahams, in his twenty-seven years as editor of the series, has shown an unerring ability to discover the writers who have gone on to become the seminal voices of contemporary American fiction. Continuing in this tradition, this year's collection includes several new writers - Thom Jones, the first-prize winner, Cornelia Nixon, and John Van Kirk; many writers who are quickly establishing themselves on the literary horizon - Andre Lee and Linda Svendsen; as well as some familiar names such as Charles Johnson, Alice Adams, and Joyce Carol Oates. The value of the collection is enhanced by a special section devoted to biographies and comments about their work by the authors themselves. Representative of the very best in contemporary fiction, Prize Stories is proof of the continuing strength of the American short story." --
