Two teenage sisters are aboard a sailing ship bound for Naples, where they will be married off to wealthy merchants. The youngest, Hypatia, is shy and sensitive. Her elder sister, Eleni, is a rebellious trouble-maker. The pair argue bitterly. Hypatia is comforted by Socrates, a handsome deckhand who has fallen in love with the girl. He gives her a mysterious gold brooch in the shape of a scarab. The voyage to Naples is ended by a disaster, which kills most of the crew and other passengers. The sisters are lucky enough to escape with their lives, as is Socrates. The three of them drift off course, struggling to control the wayward boat. Their fortunes seem to improve when a mighty vessel appears, offering them passage. It's Atlantean, and the newcomers seem friendly - at least at first. But the sisters are quickly separated from Socrates. Eleni makes female enemies, who threaten her life. The future looks bleak for the pair. But when a priestess sees Hypatia's gold scarab, she decides it is an omen. Hypatia, the scarab-bearer, is amongst the elect. Her destiny is to join the mysterious and seductive Pleasure Cult of Atlantis. The Cult is ruled by an enigmatic High Priestess, named Ottilia. Immortality is the least of her strange powers...
