About PHANTASTES: A FAERIE ROMANCE: An Illustrated Enchanting Fantasy Odyssey
The book “Phantastes” was George MacDonald’s first prose fiction work. In 1858, George MacDonald wrote and published the book "Phantastes," which is considered the first English fantasy novel. It launched MacDonald’s writing career and had a significant impact on the imagination of a famous Christian apologist. The story follows Anodos, a young man who enters Fairy Land the day after his twenty-first birthday. He experiences a series of adventures that leave a lasting impact on him. This new edition features the complete and unabridged text with modern spellings of common words, new illustrations inspired by MacDonald’s great work, as well as a Preface by his son Greville MacDonald. Taking inspiration from vintage editions of 1870 and 1905, it provides a classic style that appeals to all readers.
