Bud Stewart, a young midwesterner, lands his first newspaper job in a forgotten burg in the old South. The editor of the Antioch Chronicle sends him on his first assignment, an early morning murder in a downtown deli. From the scene of the crime, the cub reporter follows the cops to a nearby homeless mission. Here, a new world is unveiled to him as he pursues interviews with street people in hopes of finding clues to what eventually becomes a double murder.
