Lila's story, is essentially a short story of unrequited love, set alongside a harrowing tale of domestic violence. Set in a small town in Maine, USA, the story is told by Stu, a retired vet, who has been in love with Lila his entire life, but for the most part, has had to settle for a distant friendship. Whilst he suspects that all is not quite as it seems in Lila's marriage to Brad, he never expected just how terrifying the real truth is. When a chance meeting throws the two together, following the mysterious disappearance of Brad, Lila tells her story of years of emotional, sexual and physical abuse and how, one night, she finally she snaps and fights back. The ending, has a couple of unforeseen twists, leaving the reader wondering as to quite how the story just might end. A second book by Steve Rhodes following on form the recent release of his autobiography, Faith. Something I can't feel, this is his first foray into fiction. I defy anyone to read the ending and not shed a few tears. I know I did.
