From birth, it was obvious Tara had a unique hearing problem: she heard too well. Her mother dedicates her life to finding a solution and providing an environment that allowed Tara to develop as a normal child. To escape the loud painful sounds of normal city life, the two of them live in the desert. Tara is home schooled, she is an eager student providing the lessons do not involve sounds above a very soft whisper. She becomes an avid reader. As a young girl without playmates, the surrounding quiet desert becomes her playground and introduction to the marvels of nature. By her early teens she is a very knowledgeable student of the animal and plant life of the surrounding desert and mountains. At 16, after her mother's death, her skills allow her to survive alone in the quiet wilderness. In her early twenties she is doing well as a gold prospector in Northern California. Everything changes when, after an earthquake she finds and uses an unearthly alien weapon leading to her being pursued by the FBI. Attempting to escape on a sailboat she faces death, but is allowed a reprieve by the aliens after they reclaim their weapon.
