About Faces Rebuilt The Untold Story of WWI Plastic Surgery: How Courage, Art, and Medicine Reconstructed the Broken Faces of the Great War

Faces Rebuilt: The Untold Story of WWI Plastic Surgery uncovers the extraordinary origins of modern reconstructive surgery. Amid the devastation of World War I, visionary surgeon Harold Gillies and his team at Queen's Hospital, Sidcup turned unimaginable suffering into a revolution of hope. Through rich storytelling, historical photographs, and detailed accounts, author Mark E. Jemy reveals how soldiers known as the "Gueules Cassées" (Broken Faces) were given a second chance at life. From pioneering surgical techniques like the tubed pedicle graft to the compassionate artistry of Henry Tonks and Francis Derwent Wood, this book captures the courage, science, and humanity that reshaped not only faces-but the future of medicine itself. A must-read for lovers of medical history, military history, and human resilience, Faces Rebuilt is both a tribute to innovation and a meditation on healing-physical, emotional, and moral.
