Head of forensics, Jeremy Hargreaves is good at his job and is regarded by colleagues and superiors as a genius. Criminals don't stand a chance if he's on the case. He's friends with everyone but allows no one into his personal space. Until now, he's been able to shut out the gore of crime scenes and images of the dead and memories of his own abuse as a child, but nightmares start to infiltrate his sleep and he battles for his sanity. Jane Fitzgerald, a fledgling psychologist and new to the department, takes interest in the obviously damaged head of forensics. She recommends him for compulsory leave to cope with what she believes maybe PTSD. She continues to treat him at home, and against her better judgment, develops feelings for him. When a chilling murder bears similarities to the unsolved murder of Jeremy's mother, the flimsy mental shield that Jane has helped him create is shattered, he's suspended and starts losing track of time. As Jane works with Jeremy to hold his fragile psyche together, one murder becomes a string of surgically precise killings - and then Jane disappears
