The man had recognized his gait? “How far back did you make me?” He’d thought this was the truck that had passed earlier, but he realized now it was a different vehicle. It was the same color, but the one he’d seen before had been a Ram 1500. This was a Ram 3500. “Several miles.” Hawk gave him a sly grin. “I wasn’t sure until you turned in here. I’ve been watching the whole time. You’re the only person I can think of who’d even have an interest in this place. I guess you’re lucky I’m not a cop.” Jason felt panic creeping up the back of his neck, but he did his best to avoid thinking about it. Marv Hawk had never gotten the best of Jason during high school, and he wouldn’t now. “You haven’t called the cops?” Marv shook his head. “Not yet.” The threat in Marv’s tone was unmistakable. “What do you want?” There was a limit to what Jason would do to keep Hawk from going to the police. But Jason would hear him out before deciding. “I have a problem. I think you can help. You’re a former FBI agent, right?” “What’s your problem?” “Somebody’s trying to kill me.”
