In no time, expedition manager Harold Ross cobbles together, on Garvin’s behalf, an archaeological expedition to Yucatán. Ross flies in postgraduate students Ann Kaplan and Neal Child, who carry experimental technology capable of reading glyphs caked in carbonate deposits. Ross also hires controversial archaeologist Mike Trenton, fired from his teaching position for a preposterous paper on waterways connecting ancient Maya cities. Overnight, as Ross’s new acquisitions arrive at the site, the up-and-coming enterprise faces logistical issues caused by an obscure entity that slays the expedition members. Professor Trenton and Kaplan turn to an inscription wall for clues to the identity of the slayer.
