Joshua Foster's great uncle, a chemist in South Africa, developed a compound which had strange effects when leather and wood came together. Since Josh himself was a chemist, but also a coach for his high school baseball team, his son and nephew (pitcher and catcher on the team) devised ways to use these compounds to help their team play for the state high school championship.
