About A Western Hemisphere Dilemma - A Nuclear Attack Avoided (A Mike Cummins' Thriller)
A Western Hemisphere Dilemma – A Nuclear Attack Avoided A mysterious excavation site on the Southern coast of Cuba, confusing information found in the personal effects of a Cuban soldado killed during the hostilities in Grenada, and intelligence on Russian subs that defies logic. The CIA is convinced there is something major happening, but what? They ask ex-Swift boat commander Mike Cummins to bring his unique set of talents to this situation while acknowledging they can’t fully explain what’s going on nor can they project the degree of danger in play. Twenty-plus years after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs, the Russians continue to be embarrassed by their backing down. Now, everything is perfect: Fidel Castro is supportive and not going anywhere; Russia could easily financially afford to do it; and the military, tactical, and political repercussions overwhelmingly favored the Russians. They are ready to enact their revenge. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has clandestinely brought nuclear subs to Cuba and successfully hidden them in the remote area of Marea del Portillo. The area around Marea del Portillo and this part of the Sierra Maestra Mountains is remote, sparsely populated, and not a place where others would normally come – therefore, ideal. The Russians have put in place a small group of nuclear submarines – a unique missile capability in the Western Hemisphere. These subs are mobile platforms which allow the Russians to launch missiles on the United States. This is a first strike force deployed into the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Totally unacceptable to the United States These subs will create a high pressure diplomatic and military challenge for the United States, threatening it on an unprecedented scale. This is a fictional description of how the submarines were brought to Cuba, the elaborate preparations behind their readiness, and the improbable action undertaken by Mike Cummins to thwart their success.
