Appleseed is doing that slightly maddening thing where it keeps changing shape just as you think you’ve got your footing. I’m about 37% in and still not sure whether I’m here for the ideas or for the sheer stubbornness of it.

It’s a space opera, yes, but not the tidy kind that hands you a clean map and a reassuring sense that the plot will behave itself. It asks for patience, then actually gives something back. Which, frankly, is rarer than it should be.

That sounds like the kind of book I’d need to read with a pencil nearby, which is either a promise or a warning. I’m tempted by the premise, but I do like my space opera with at least one firm handrail. The shapeshifting part is interesting, though. Sometimes that’s the bit that makes a book worth the effort.
