Crime & Mystery
Finished The Green Mandarin Mystery and I’m oddly fond of how old-school it feels. Scientists vanishing, police baffled, everything slightly stiff with importance. Very “the room is full of smoke and everyone is pretending that’s normal.”

It’s the kind of mystery where atmosphere does a lot of the work, which I usually respect more than elaborate showing off. No need for constant noise when the setup is this neatly pressured.

Also, there’s something satisfying about a book that trusts its own premise. Not every mystery needs to sprint.

That slightly formal, almost bureaucratic feel can be part of the pleasure here. It makes the vanishing act seem less like melodrama and more like a problem that ought to have a sensible filing system somewhere.

I also like that it stays in the detective lane rather than trying to out-shout itself. Some mysteries age better when they’re content to be clever in a quiet way.
