The setup does a lot of heavy lifting here. “Guilty of murder” is not exactly subtle, but it does the job if you like your romance with a proper cloud over it.
What kept me reading was less the label and more the tension around Gavin Nighthawk being seen that way in Whitehorn. That kind of story lives or dies on atmosphere and whether the emotional stakes feel earned. This one leans into that. Not polished in a glossy way, more bruised and uneasy, which suits it better.
