Three books for the price of one is either a very sensible idea or a slightly suspicious one, depending on how much faith you have in the phrase “rom-com omnibus”.

I’ve kept The Anna Bell Rom-Com Omnibus on my Want to Read shelf because I do like the idea of getting a whole run in one go. Less faffing about, more actual reading. Also, Anna Bell is one of those names I keep meaning to get to.

Still curious whether it’s a proper feast or just three books in a cheerful wrapper.

Omnibuses always make me slightly wary, mostly because “value” can be doing a lot of heavy lifting. Three books together is fine if they actually earn the combined length. If they don’t, you’ve just bought a longer version of faffing about.

That said, for rom-coms I can see the appeal. If the voice works, I’d rather have a full stretch of it than keep being asked to start over.

An omnibus can be a decent way of testing whether a writer’s rhythm actually holds over a few books, which is more useful than one shiny premise. The slight catch is that if the first one doesn’t grab you, you’ve still got a lot of pages to be polite about.

I’m usually more interested in whether the three feel like a proper run or just a bundle.
