Steampunk airships usually need one sharp detail to get my attention, and this one has it: a heroine who has no interest in marrying well. That’s a pleasantly stubborn starting point.

I’m not pretending I’ve read it yet, but I do like a book that announces its refusal to behave in the expected way. Add in inventions, airships and a paranormal romance angle, and I’m at least curious enough to keep it on the Want to Read shelf for now.

Paranormal romance in steampunk can be a very good troublemaker. The machinery does half the work, then the supernatural turns up and refuses to mind its own business.

I’m mildly suspicious of any book trying to do all three at once, though. Airships, inventions and romance can be a lovely mess if the atmosphere holds. If it’s on my Want to Read shelf, it’s mostly because I like a heroine who starts by declining the whole marriage market.
