Romance
Small-town romance with a bit of scandal can work nicely when it doesn’t get too glossy about itself.

Rising Star: A Country Singer Small Town Romance is very much for readers who like a hometown return, a lot of gossip in the air, and a love story that has to deal with the mess rather than float above it. That part worked for me.

It’s not flashy. Which is probably the point.

The scandal side of these books needs a steady hand. If it gets too polished, the whole thing turns a bit airless.

What I liked here was that the small-town setting actually feels like part of the pressure, not just decoration. That matters more to me than the “returning hometown star” setup on its own. The genre can survive a lot, but it does need some gossip with teeth.
