A fantasy can get away with a lot if the magic feels properly thought through. Characters matter more, obviously, but I’m still suspicious of books that hand-wave the rules and hope I won’t notice.
*Soul of the World* is on my want-to-read list for that reason. Unique magic system first, then the rest can earn its place. If the characters are as memorable as the premise suggests, that’s usually enough to keep me around. If not, well, there are always more books than patience.
